Mindfulness based practices are about being aware of yourself without judgement, and present in the moment. It can be difficult to just “be” without continually “fast-forwarding” to future outcomes, worrying and anticipating about what’s to come, or reviewing regrets and past decisions. There is a time for all of that planning and reflection, sure, but it can also cause undo stress since we can’t change the past or control the future. If we create mindful moments each day, then our energy is focused on making the most of right now.
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is used to effectively to reduce stress and anxious feelings, and helps depressed feelings by shifting over to a more positive focus. Mindfulness can be incorporated into other modalities, including CBT or even the beginning phases of EMDR therapy. All clients can benefit from incorporating mindfulness techniques into their daily routine.
