Depression can leave you feeling low for extended periods, some describe it as “dark”, or even just numb. We all have bad days that we can recover from; we return to our regular interactions and activities, and get back to normal. If you or your child are not bouncing back as expected and this is getting in the way of normal everyday functioning, we will work together to get you on stable ground and then explore the underlying issues. Here are some symptoms you may be seeing with depression:
- helplessness
- guilt
- feelings of worthlessness
- hopelessness
- shutting down / keeping to self
- loss of energy
- loss of appetite
- overwhelming emotions
- lack of interest in daily activities
- irritability
- sleep problems
- thoughts of suicide or self-harm
Its not uncommon to see depression and anxiety together, sometimes the symptoms of one tend to mask the other. Fortunately, symptoms of both depression and anxiety respond well to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as mindfulness and relaxation techniques. If depression appears to stem from circumstances in the environment, these can also be addressed through family therapy or the coordination of other resources to put appropriate environmental supports in place. Sometimes heavy, depressed feelings may be caused by past events or experiences, and these can be treated with EMDR therapy.
